In this
video, Rob Johnson from Bona explains how to properly mix and apply
Bona Traffic Wood Floor Finish to recoat a hardwood
floor. Bona Traffic is a 2 part waterborne polyurethane specifically formulated for heavy traffic commercial and residential
applications.
There are a few things to do before we start finishingthe hardwood floors.
- Like any floor finish, you need to mix it before you begin to ensure that the finish hasn't settled, and that the
flattening agents, the stuff that makes it Semi Gloss or Satin, are evenly dispersed throughout the finish. Bona recommends
shaking the gallon for 45 seconds.
- After mixing in the catalyst (the part B), you will need to shake the floor finish again for 45 seconds to make sure it has
completely mixed and activated all of the finish.
Now that the finish is prepared, we can move over to the wood floor. The floor in the video has already been cleaned and
abraded using a Buffer and a cleaning agent called Bona Prep. We are all set to start applying finish the floor.
- Pour a small puddle of finish on the hardwood floor where you are going to start finishing, and get the roller completely
saturated with finish. You can use this time to roll the finish close to the walls.
- Once the roller is saturated, we are ready to begin. Pour a line of finish approximately 4" wide perpendicularly across
the flooring boards.
- Place your roller before the line of finish, and gently pull it back towards you. Usually three or four feet depending on
your reach.
- Roll the roller back towards the line, moving slightly to the side of the pile, and the most important part, feather up.
Never stop the roller on the floor, always gently ease it up.
- Repeat until the you have worked your way across the room. Try to pull the finish back to the same place while working
across the room, that way your next pour of finish will be even.
- Once you have completed that line, pour another line, and continue the process.
After a few minutes you should have your technique down. If you have ever painted with a roller, applying floor finish
this way will come very easily to you. If you have baseboard and quarter round installed, you may want to use a Cut In Pad,
or a Trim Pad around the walls as you go so you don't get finish on them.
