For a truly eco–friendly, green flooring, all the other accessories that go along with it should also be green
products. This includes the underlayment, adhesive, finishes and sealers that are used in the installation process of the
flooring.
Underlayment is the sandwich layer between the subfloor and the actual flooring. It provides a suitable base on which to
install the floor, covers a number of deficiencies in the subfloor, contributes to walking comfort and often has
sound–absorption properties. In addition, a good and suitable underlayment protects the flooring, enhancing its
lifespan.
An eco–friendly underlayment should be non–toxic, formaldehyde and VOC–free.
One of the best green underlayments is cork, which is harvested from the bark of the cork tree which makes it a
sustainable and renewable resource. The advantage in using cork underlayment is its unmatched sound–deadening property,
while providing substantial comfort.
Rubber is another great alternative which has both sound-proofing and moisture–resisting properties. Natural rubber
is made from latex which originates from the sap of the rubber tree. Some forms of rubber underlayment are made from recycled
rubber salvaged from tires in landfills. The conversion process is also conservative in its use of water and energy. This
makes some rubber underlayment eco–friendly and green.
