Green Schools Modernization and Renewable Hardwood Flooring

Just yesterday, the U.S. House of Representatives passed an amendment to the Green Schools Modernization bill which promotes the use of a variety of renewable green flooring products in order to make schools a safer and healthier place for our children. The Green Schools Modernization amendment, once voted on and passed by the U.S. Senate, would require any school that receives grant funding to disclose if the floor coverings installed in their institutions are made using renewable resources.

This amendment to the Green Schools Modernization bill is the result of the collaborative efforts of the Hardwood Federation and the National Wood Flooring Association (NWFA). Specifically recognized in this bill amendment is the environmental attributes of renewable hardwood flooring which is made with 100% renewable resources.

The Green School Modernization amendment, if passed, will be put into action using $6 billion in funding for the building of new schools and renovation of existing schools in order to make "greener" places for students to learn.

The existing Green Schools Modernization bill already specifies for the use of floors that meet Green Globes, Energy Star, USGBC's LEED, or equivalent state programs, all of which renewable hardwood flooring can also qualify for.
