Dedicated to promoting green building, the U.S. Green Building Council (USBGC) is comprised of
over 15,000 organizations. One of the most notable branches of the USBGC is LEED, or Leadership in Energy and Environmental
Design. LEED offers a third-party green certification for buildings that meet certain sustainable requirements. For this
specific purpose, LEED has created the Green Building Rating System to help persuade builders, architects and flooring
manufacturers to make more eco-conscious decisions.
Some of LEED's goals consist of making existing buildings greener through maintenance, promoting eco-friendly healthcare
facilities, and educating businesses as well as consumers on environmentally friendly practices. Benefits of getting
certified by LEED include:
- Energy and water conservation
- Minimizes landfill waste
- Reducing greenhouse gas emissions
- Cutting down on operating costs
- Healthier indoor air quality (IAQ)
