The debate over whether or not terrazzo floors are eco-friendly is a bit difficult. Epoxy is a petroleum-based material and can contain phthalates, plasticizers that can be potentially hazardous to the environment. In addition, the production of cement requires the use of energy-intensive machines. The good news is that epoxy- and cement-based terrazzo does not off gas volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
Terrazzo flooring can last for a long time if cared for properly, and can be recycled at the end of its lifetime. Traditional terrazzo floors are finished and installed in place by a craftsperson. Installation of this type of terrazzo should be executed by a certified professional, which can be fairly expensive process. There are also individual terrazzo tiles that can be fairly simple for the do-it-yourself installer.
The thicker you're terrazzo floors are, the more subfloor support they'll need. This could add to your floor project cost. Terrazzo floors that are cement-based need to be sealed periodically, while epoxy-based terrazzo does not. Terrazzo flooring can also be buffed. In fact, some manufacturers suggest having terrazzo buffed monthly. It's important that you consider all of these aspects before choosing terrazzo for your home.
