THIN FLATS are the nation’s first Platinum Certified LEED–Homes green residential duplex project. Completed in 2008 and located in Northern Liberties, Philadelphia, THIN FLATS consists of 8 residential units. This eco friendly LEED certified duplex project is an urban community with a complete focus on sustainability. In fact, the THIN FLATS LEED certified green homes are designed to reduce energy usage by a total of at least 50%.

If you aren’t familiar with the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification program created by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), I suggest you visit this link. In general, a LEED certified green home is built to use less water, energy, and natural resources and to generate less waste. The result is fewer greenhouse gas emissions, less money spent on water and energy bills, reduced exposure to indoor toxins including mold and mildew, and other environmental and health benefits. We see just this with the innovative design features built into the THIN FLATS residential duplexes.

In regards to flooring, the THIN FLATS Platinum Certified LEED Homes residential duplexes offer several eco friendly green features. For example:

  • THIN FLATS provides a hydronic radiant floor heating system and hot water using solar thermal panels.
  • THIN FLATS features Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified “White Tiger” hardwood flooring.
  • The concrete used in the construction of THIN FLATS contains a least 25% recycled fly ash content.
  • All paint, sealants, and adhesives used in the building of these LEED certified homes emit low to no VOCs (volatile organic compounds).

In addition to eco friendly flooring, THIN FLATS also features rainwater harvesting for irrigation, electric car charging ports, heat recovery ventilations (HRV) which promote a healthy indoor air quality (IAQ) and much more. For more on the eco friendly features of THIN FLATS, the LEED–Homes platinum certified green duplex project, visit thinflats.leedphilly.com.
