BASF created the Eco Efficiency Analysis in order to identify products, including floor coverings, that are not only
ecologically safe, but a good economic choice, hence the word "eco efficiency". To date, over 400 products have been through
the BASF Eco Efficiency Analysis. An example of a floor covering that has been through the Eco Efficiency Analysis is
Sustainable Green Cork Flooring by Wicanders, which performed exceptionally well.
When analyzing flooring, BASF’s Eco Efficiency Analysis takes into consideration any positive or negative environmental
impacts during the lifecycle of a floor covering, from the cradle to the grave (meaning from the acquiring of resources to
manufacture the flooring to the end of the floor covering’s lifetime). This includes ecological aspects such as energy
consumption, resource and material consumption, toxic air pollutions from emissions called volatile organic compounds (VOCs),
water pollution, land usage, and effects on indoor air quality (IAQ) and therefore one’s health. BASF’s Eco Efficiency
Analysis then compiles these factors with economic factors (which include the costs of manufacturing, purchasing, installing,
and maintaining the flooring) and plots the result on a graph called an “Eco Efficiency Portfolio.” Using this portfolio, the
eco efficiency of the floor covering in question becomes clear in a visible model, helping consumers choose products that are
not only green, but also priced reasonably.
In addition to having been created and overseen by the well–known and respected BASF, the Eco Efficiency Evaluation
also has received the German Association for Technical Inspection (TÜV Berlin) stamp of approval. This certifies the BASF
Eco Efficiency Analysis as a highly effective program for measuring the eco efficiency of a particular floor covering.
