Under the GI Bill, the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs has consented to reimburse Veterans, eligible dependents and
reservists for expenses incurred in taking LEED Professional Exams conducted under the auspices of the US Green Building
Certification Institute (GBCI).
Peter Templeton, President GBCI, has expressed the Institute’s pleasure in being a part of VA’s vigorous effort in aiding
veterans gain the credentials and skills needed for total participation in the new green economy. LEED credentials would go a
long way in assisting veterans accomplish their professional goals in a career in green building and related fields.
Veterans and others eligible, planning to take the LEED Professional Exam should apply directly for reimbursement to the
VA. Under this arrangement, VA will reimburse up to $2,000 per exam. This reimbursement will apply to anyone who has taken
the LEED Professional Exam post December 3, 2008. VA’s pamphlet on licenses and certifications has further details about the
program and relevant certification benefits.
U.S. Green Building Council's LEED green building rating systems are supported by LEED Green Associateship or a LEED AP
credential. Such exams to obtain these certifications are administered by the GBCI. A LEED Green Associateship demonstrates
a professional’s expertise in non–technical fields of practice. Green building practitioners demonstrate their
proficiency and specialization in LEED rating systems through the five LEED AP credentials. These are Building Design +
Construction (BD+C), Interior Design + Construction (ID+C), Operations + Maintenance (O+M), Homes, or Neighborhood
Development (ND.
