Eco-Friendly Outdoor Flooring Options

Patio and deck floors are exposed to all different types of weather depending on where you live. They are likely to get hot in summer, very cold in winter and have to be water resistant. When considering eco–friendly outdoor flooring options, some of the best choices are as follows:

Stone: Outdoor stone flooring is able to withstand extremes of temperature and retains its color despite exposure to sunlight. The vast majority of hard stones resist water and do not stain. But opinions are divided on whether or not stone is really an eco-friendly flooring option. Some argue that it is not a renewable resource and the manner in which it has to be quarried requires considerable energy. Along with transportation, purists argue that stone leaves a considerable carbon footprint.

Recycled Content Concrete: Concrete is cool underfoot and can be finished with a unique and decorative surface. It can be given a natural look with the appearance of granite or similar materials. Some types of concrete can be made from recycled material making it a greener outdoor flooring option.

Recycled Brick: Brick flooring is weather–resistant and fireproof, and most types of brick are poor heat conductors. This means the floor remains cool through the hottest part of the day in summer and not freezing cold in winter. In winter, brick acts as an insulator. Brick floors are durable and require little maintenance.

Recycled terrazzo tiles: Recycled terrazzo flooring fits the bill exactly. Floor tiles made of this material are available in a variety of decorative colors and designs. Recycled terrazzo is impervious to weather extremes, is durable and fade resistant.
