Allergy-Friendly Flooring

The American Academy of Allergy Asthma and Immunology estimates that just over half the American population suffers from allergies. Common home allergens are dust mites, plants, smoke, perfumes, mold, chemicals, pollen and pet dander. Floors are particularly susceptible to dust mites, pet dander and mold which tend to settle, triggering off indoor allergies and asthma attacks. Another common allergen is Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) that are off gassed by certain floorings, and adhesives and solvents used in their installation. Most flooring manufacturers are now switching to non-VOC materials. Green flooring is a preferred alternative as most are VOC and formaldehyde free. An ideal choice is bamboo or hardwood flooring, linoleum or cork, all of which resist allergens and mold growth.

Marmoleum® is a Forbo Flooring linoleum product which is used world-wide in hospitals, offices, schools and commercial establishments. Marmoleum® is the preferred choice in allergy-friendly flooring because it is made with natural raw materials and installed with solvent–free adhesive emitting no harmful VOC. It has an anti–static surface which resists dust collection and is easy to clean. Furthermore, oxidation of linseed oil, one of its key components, results in bactericidal properties and inhibits the growth of micro–organisms.

Bamboo and Hardwood are both naturally hypoallergenic and environmentally friendly. These are durable floors and available in smooth non–toxic finishes where dust and allergens are prevented from settling. When ordering, select a product that is free from VOCs in any of the treatment processes.
