Terrazzo floors are actually a type of cement that has marble chips embedded in the surface. Despite cement floor's hardness, they can actually be quite porous when not properly sealed. You can increase terrazzo floor's stain resistance by applying a penetrating sealer to the surface. While this won't prevent spills from staining terrazzo, it will seal the pores and go a long way towards preventing damage. Terrazzo floors may need to be sealed periodically to hinder its stain absorption.
Sweeping and dry mopping terrazzo floors on a routine basis are important, as dirt and debris can act like an abrasive and scratch terrazzo's surface. Additionally, avoid using liquid cleaners that contain acid or alkaline. Conventional floor cleaning products often include these ingredients and should be avoided. Eco-friendly flooring cleaners are highly recommended for terrazzo floors as they are usually free from acid and alkaline. One cup of neutral cleaner and water should be enough to get your terrazzo floors clean.
When mopping, make sure that you change the rinse water often; otherwise you may be left with unsightly dirt streaks. Grime that cannot be removed with a good mopping can be scrubbed clean with an electric scrubbing machine and strong cleaning solution. To help reinstate the floor's natural sheen, buff terrazzo floors with an electric polishing machine. Note that some mops and cleaning solutions contain oils that can permanently stain the surface of terrazzo.
