Green Floor Refinishing

When it comes to refinishing your hardwood or bamboo floors, green floor refinishing is a safe choice. Green floor refinishing is not only safe for the environment, but also ensures the safety of those doing the refinishing and the inhabitants. In order for your hardwood refinishing or bamboo refinishing job to be considered green, or eco-friendly, there are several steps that must be taken:

  1. The home or business should be protected by sealing off all vents and doorways leading to the area of installation to prevent dust from entering other areas. In addition, be sure to turn off your air conditioning and heating systems to protect them from dust. Even after taking these precautions, it is smart to replace your HVAC filter shortly after the project is complete as it will likely accumulate dust from the floor refinishing job.
  2. To reduce the amount of dust that sanding generates, choose machines that capture dust during the sanding process. Always choose energy efficient machines for your green floor refinishing job.
  3. The refinisher should wear a respirator and a high quality dust mask to prevent dust and other harmful fumes from entering their lungs.
  4. Choose stains and finishing products that are low in VOC’s such as some natural oil-based stains, oil-based finishes and water-based floor finishes. Avoid acrylic and urethane stains that are high in harmful VOCs.
  5. Be sure to ventilate the area thoroughly during your green floor refinishing job and dispose of any leftover stains, finishes, and other refinishing materials properly once your green floor refinishing job is complete.
