How many people hand money to those who stand on the side of the road holding signs soliciting for money? Are you
completely desensitized to it or skeptical? Does someone have to meet a certain criteria before you consider handing them
money or is it something you would never consider?
Admittedly I give money to some of these people throughout the year. The other day we were driving home from the Brazilian
Steakhouse and I spotted a young girl with a sign that read “scared to be homeless, please help.” At the stoplight we handed
her money and continued on our way home. Within a few miles we couldn’t stop thinking of the girl’s demeanor and decided to
turn around and see what else we could do to help.
When we arrived back at the intersection she was still there but half heartedly holding the sign as if she was ashamed and
embarrassed. This is where I said to myself she is either a really good actress or she really needs help. Erring on the side
of caution, we decided to give her the benefit of the doubt. I had Jennifer approach her so she wasn’t intimidated. She told
Jennifer she was a graphic design artist that had been laid off, and her husband, a union carpenter, had been out of work for
most of the year. Being Las Vegas and one of the worst economies in the USA, this sounded very reasonable. The girl said that
they had just received their 3–day pay or quit notice from their apartments as they were far behind on their rent.
After Jennifer shared her story with me, we decided to offer to give her some graphic design work. Not knowing her skill
level I figured there was something between the different companies that we could give her. At this point the girl was
crying, grateful for the offer. We got her e–mail address and contact number.
Jennifer made several attempts to contact her but we never heard back. Hopefully she found the help she needed and she and
her family are safe. But, admittedly part of me wonders if she was just a good actress. Either way, I say it is best to try
and help others. If for no other reason, it is good karma. So the next time you are feeling cynical when you see that person
on the side of the road, considering reaching out. A small gesture can have a major impact on someone’s life.
If giving money to someone on the side of the road is too much of a crapshoot for you, consider spending the days after
the holidays cleaning out your closet. I make it a point to clean out and donate several times a year. It is a feel good
thing to do, especially knowing it makes such a huge difference in the lives of others.
