Reported Problems With Konecto Vinyl Flooring

At FindAnyFloor.com we get many inquiries about problems with Konecto Vinyl Flooring. Konecto touts their Vinyl Plank Flooring as flooring that is easy to install however, most of the complaints seem to arise over complications with installation. While many consumers have written that they are pleased with their Konecto flooring, others have struggled with it and this can be common with flooring. What works for one does not always work for another. Here are some of the complaints we have heard about when installing Konecto flooring:

  • One consumer complains about planks lifting at the seams in several areas of his 600 square feet floor. The sub–floor is concrete and no underlayment was used as it wasn’t considered necessary by the manufacturer or installer. The floor is now showing signs of condensation with evidence of mold. The consumer does admit that the floor is beautiful but is disappointed about its post-installation performance.
  • Another consumer had problems after installing 900 square feet Konecto Vinyl Flooring. Within a week of installation the seams began to lift from each other. The distributor has filed a warranty claim but Konecto wants the claim raised by the retailer. Konecto will not speak directly to the consumer and this is frustrating for the consumer.
  • One consumer has installed Konecto over a concrete sub floor on the ground floor and over a wood sub floor on the floor above. The vinyl flooring installed on the wood floor has not lifted though that installed over concrete has lifted all over within a month of installation. The consumer believes this could be temperature related as he has observed that the colder it gets the more it lifts.
  • A user who has used vinyl tiles has the same complaint with over 70% of the floor lifting. The distributor has provided the user with repair glue as a stop gap measure. This is more suitable to repair the odd lift rather than 70% of a floor.

Konecto claims “3 Step Easy Installtion.” Here is a look at part of their installation instructions:

‘Condition Konecto Prior to installation: Konecto must be stored at room temperature of at least 65 degrees Fahrenheit. For 24 to 48 hours before installation. Do not open the packages but spread them out. Stack no more than 3 high with at least 4” of airflow around and not next to and heat or cooling ducts and direct sunlight.

When each plank is joined, utilize a hand roller directly on the joined seam to create the proper bond between strip A and strip B. This is a mandatory part of the installation procedure.

After completion roll the entire floor in both directions with a 100 lbs roller.

Before starting an installation two planks should be joined and then rolled and pulled apart. A bond should be observed throughout the whole strip. Adhesive legs and/or transfer from one side to the other should be seen. This will confirm the material is acclimated and the temperature of material is correct for installation.

Not rolling will void Warranty.’

Depending on skill level, this flooring installation instructions may not be an easy user–friendly procedure. It also suggests that all conditions must be perfect or else the floor will fail to perform and the warranty will be voided. It would further appear that the flooring is heat–sensitive and will not suit all climatic conditions.

Before installing Konecto Vinyl Plank or Tile flooring, it’s best to consult an installer who has knowledge and experience installing this product. Some flooring types are harder to self install and the conditions (floor level, humidity, etc) have to be near perfect to get the best performance results. For this reason, it is always recommended to consult an installation professional with experience installing a particular floor, even if you are going to install it yourself.

The Konecto absolutely does not work when laid on concrete. It lifts at the seams no matter how you install it and the glue is just not sufficient becasue as you glue a lifted seam in one place, the seam lifts in another over tiem. You would have to glue the the entire length of all seams to approach a solution and then I doubt it would work. We have used glue, heat gun, and every other approach to no avail. The glue in Konecto flooring products is BAD. We are out $5k due to this.

we purchased 1,000 feet of Konecto flooring...installed it following the instructions to the letter...after about 3 months the floor started to come un-glued at the seams...noe it has all un-glued...we took METROFLOR to court and won the case ($5,000.00), then METROFLOR used a trick to get out of it...I fell the other day...lucky no injury but this floor is now a danger to me, my wife and all friends who come to visit...I am now going back and filing another claim...this time I know the trick and will be ready for them.

The Konecto flooring is a nightmare. As is the communication with MetroFlor, their distributor and the retailer we purchased the product from. From what I can tell by reading blogs all over the Internet, the problem is in the adhesive and applying to concrete, not in the install, though MetroFlor insists our product wasn't properly installed. I do not recommend this product.

I have read about problems with Konecto Flooring on concrete-most seem to think it is a temperture problem. Has anyone laid it on concrete with a radiant floor heating system?

Adam posted on: January 5, 2011

We are needing to put flooring in our great room (kitchen, dining room, living room). We were seriously considering the Konecto flooring. Our subfloor is concrete...not so sure we want to risk the Konecto system on this type of subfloor. Are there any suggestions for other products that might work better in this application?

BK posted on: January 10, 2011

I have visited a few other sites regarding this product and have concluded that there are far more happy customers than not. We are going to go ahead with our installation and will report back-good or bad. This is getting put in on concrete 1st floor, gypcrete 2nd floor all radiant floor heat in Alaska in winter.

I had about 2000 sq ft of this installed in my sports bar. What a huge mistake..this stuff is plain junk! It started coming apart at the seems within months. The manufacture tried blaming me saying we were cleaning it wrong. What a load of crap! DON'T EVEN CONSIDER BUYING THIS FLOORING!!!

BK posted on: March 23, 2011

Reporting back. Not seeing any problems. Installer said that there is definetly a difference in the lower and higher ends of Konecto-you get what you pay for. He put some a couple years ago in a 5,000sf elder home and a multi floor apartment complex (both get a lot of use)with no problems reported. I think there are a lot of installation factors that could contribute to problems. Get an installer that has experience with Konecto-worth the $.

I laid about 300 sq ft of Sierra plank in a kitchen and bar area in my basement directly over concrete and it has performed beautifully. I did acclimate the product first and I also rolled it during installation. It's been down over 2 years now and has seen it's share of traffic, spills, etc and still looks great. Highly recommend this product.

We have installed over 30,000 sq. ft of commercial plank konecto. climate acclimated, rolled, installed on heated concrete by a commercial flooring company. The seams are seperating in numerous areas, you can visibly see every seam that is butted together end to end, corners have raised and are chipped off with traffic. A 2 year battle with kenecto has resulted in nothing at this point.

It seems that manufacturer have updated installation instructions and have made them more clear and exact. For example, they don’t recommend installing the flooring over concrete with excessive moisture. “Moisture intrusion is a totally different situation that can arise with new or old concrete that exhibits very high levels of hydrostatic pressure in combination with very high levels of alkalinity. This combination provides a substance that is highly corrosive. No floor covering, including Konecto, can withstand the long-term corrosive nature of this chemical.” This statement will prevent complains like the first one in this article.
I’ve also noticed that most of complains on the internet are rather old. It seems that the situation has changed a lot. I have interviewed several people (you may check those reviews here) and I think Konecto is rather good when properly used.

DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT. We are very unhappy with our floor. It was correctly installed by professionals and every seam is is coming up except where we walk daily. This is 2600 sqft of flooring. The company is refusing to stand behind it. DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT. The installer and supplier is standing up and replacing it. BRAND FLOORS in Onalaska, WI. See Kevin if you need flooring!

I purchased Konecto vinyl planking from the higher end Prestige line back in 2007, and I have to agree with what many are saying about the seams coming apart. In my case it took about 6 months before it started, but after 4 years of this in my living room/dining room, I would say roughly 30% of the floor has come up. The adhesive is simply not good enough. But I do love the durability of the flooring itself and the beautiful barnboard look of the planks. I have multiple dogs and heavy foot traffic, and it has held up well...if only I could get the seams to stay sealed. For the price you pay for this flooring, we should expect better. It makes the case for sheet vinyl, unfortunately. And also, be prepared to use a chop saw to make your cuts. The instructions say "just score and snap"! Ridiculous. You'll break the blades of your utility knife and curse a blue streak after making a few cuts- it's not that easy. Get a chop saw and save time and aggravation.

This floor is a waste of your money. Nearly every seam is lifting after only 2 weeks. Konecto will not stand behind it. The floor was put down correctly by experienced installers. The floor is worthless. The warranty is worthless.

Brenda posted on: April 18, 2012

I installed Konecto in '06 or '07. Did it myself, didn't use a roller (I don't believe that was even part of the instructions at the time), and laid it down right over concrete. I haven't had one seam come apart. I live in the midwest, we get very cold temps. I live next to a creek and have 2 boys and a dog. This floor has been amazing for us! I have loved it. I only discovered there were problems with it because I am moving into a new house in a few weeks. Was looking up where to purchase more Konecto for my new place.

The best product to clean the floor with it Armstrong Hard Surface cleaner (it's blue). Use half water and half chemical in a squirt bottle. Spray liberally and wipe with the grain with a wet towel to evenly distribute the product. Don't walk on it until it dries in 10 minutes or so. It will look awesome and help to hike scratches.
