Stone Types

When it comes to flooring, there are so many stone types to choose from. Some stone floor options include marble, sandstone, granite and limestone. The stone type that would be ideal for your flooring project depends on the environment of the installation area. For example, if you're looking for flooring for your bathroom, you want to choose a stone type that is water resistant and can deter mold and fungi growth. Stone types that work better in moisture-susceptible areas include marble and granite that have been properly sealed. Note that some stone types may need to be sealed periodically to increase water resistance.

In addition to choosing the stone floor type, you also need to decide what stone floor finish you prefer. Consider the following stone floor finishes:

  • Split-faced: The process of chiseling stone by hand to create a rough and textured surface.
  • Acid-washed: Marble and limestone tiles are often acid-washed to give them a more rustic appearance. Acid-washing can also be used on granite to soften its natural shine.
  • Honed: Stone types that have a honed finish are less likely to show scratches and can be easier to maintain.
  • Tumbled: This is the process of tumbling stone tiles in a machine to give them a pitted look. Stone types that are often given a tumbled finish include limestone and marble.
And this is just the beginning! Learn more about stone types and finishes in FindAnyFloor.com's stone flooring section.

There are many different types of stone flooring. Like stated above there are a handful that include granite and marble, some of the most popular types of stone. The difference between granite and marble against others include the water resistance that they both have. The perfect stone flooring for the kitchen, bathroom, or even outside by the pool. Like mentioned above, from someone who has marble and granite both outside ...use a good stone floor finish if your stone floor is outside...the honed finish says that its less likely to show scratches and can be easier to maintain which is very true.
