Engineered Wood vs Solid Wood Flooring

If you are going to install hardwood flooring, many consider engineered wood a better choice than solid hardwood flooring, especially in conditions of varying temperature and humidity. Engineered wood is less susceptible to dimensional alteration, buckling and warping.

Engineered wood floors are made of a multi–ply plank construction that is designed to allow for expansion without affecting its structural stability. It comprises an inner core of softwood plywood or hardwood, or even high density fiberboard with a glued on top layer of veneer. The layers are bonded under heat and pressure to form a homogenous cross section. The stacking of layers is designed to prevent the inherent tendency of hardwood to expand, contract, cup or warp under diverse environmental conditions.

Engineered hardwood floors are still real wood flooring. Many confuse engineered wood with floors that are made to look like wood such as laminate or vinyl. This is not the case. Your engineered wood flooring will still look as beautiful as solid hardwood, in fact, it just might perform better in your home.

To me it is really easy - engineered is slightly cheaper and looks the same! I know you can effectively sand down real wood more if marked, but I'd just look after my floor!

Unlike solid Hardwood Flooring, engineered flooring can be installed in any room that you choose, even a basement, because it can withstand moisture due to the layers of flooring that withstand buckling and rippling.

Solid wood is milled from a single 3/4" thick piece of hardwood. Because of its thickness, a solid hardwood floor can be sanded and refinished over several generations of use. Solid wood flooring expands and contracts with changes in your home's relative humidity. Engineered wood is produced with three to five layers of hardwood. Each layer is stacked in a cross-grain configuration and bonded together under heat and pressure. Engineered wood floors are a cost-effective way to attain the beauty of wood floors. They’re also quick to install. The final work isn't done on site, so you avoid any smell of finish and dust from sanding.

I have not tried engineered wood flooring, but it sounds like such a useful option. Hugely cost effective if your budget is limited. And the samples I have seen, are great. And installation is so easy these days with all the DIY options available. Add to that the fact that these floors can be installed in areas where hardwood won't perform well, and you have a winner.

Sara posted on: August 25, 2011

Rika Susan you are completely right if you should have engineered wood flooring you should definitely check it with your budget before getting on with your project because this can be very expensive but if you have the budget it is definitely worth it

The engineered wood is used quite a lot these days. The wood is cheaper and it also remains in working condition longer than solid wood. I am involved with moving services and i move quite a lot of furniture. So basically its always engineered wood. I did moving to Sydney last week and i move Solid wood and it was in the bad shape. I asked the owner and he said he is planning to change it with engineered wood.

On the subject of engineered Hardwood flooring. Buy a material with a 6 mm ware layer. This gives you a floor that will be as durable as a solid hardwood floor. Select a material with the bottom made up from a multi laminate plywood with ten laminates. This gives great stability and strength to your floor.

A 6mm hardwood surface above a 15mm multi-layered hardwood cross ply. My bet would be engineered hardwood flooring

NDuncan posted on: November 4, 2011

I have pergo (laminate) flooring and do not like it at all. You cannot leave any water on it or it will expand and stay that way, ruined. If you leave a window open, you must be sure it is not going to rain that day. I would much rather prefer hardwood layered with polyurethane.

I think that it isn't really about whether engineered wood flooring is better than traditional solid wood flooring but which type is best suited to the home, lifestyle and circumstances under which the floor will be used. They both can be excellent products, but have to be well matched to their circumstances.

Engineered wood floors is not 'bullet proof' so to speak. It is appropriate for some installations, but solid hardwood flooring is still your best choice for a flooring product that will have longevity and permanence.

The previous poster has the right view of engineered vs. solid.

Solid finished on-site is absolutely appropriate for kitchens and almost any other properly prepared substrate.

The question faced by home owner as to engineered wood flooring or solid wood flooring comes up constantly. The benefits of easier fitting (floating or click system) makes engineered wood flooring the winner. Solid wood flooring does have its benefits such as durability so customers should always evaluate both.

Max posted on: January 13, 2012

They both have their benefits, but the durability of a solid wood floor is a good choice for someone staying in the home for a while. If you have a big family then cleaning the floors may become a hassle, but that's what chores are for right?

I have been investigating the different kind of hardwood floors that I could invest in to be installed. I have found out that engineered wood floors are more affordable and durable. They can also be sanded down to fix scratches or stain damage.

In Northwest Arkansas, I've noticed a lot of solid wood starting to go in. I've been in business almost 20 years and until last year had only done one nail down solid wood. So far this year I've done 5, both prefinish and bare. My site shows some examples: http://www.taorminotile.com

Although there are pros and cons to each side, many consider both to be a flooring upgrade.

Ken R posted on: March 27, 2012

If choosing an engineered wood product over traditional hardwood flooring keep in mind that you can dramatically extend the life of your floor by not allowing shoes to be worn on your floor. Also consider floor mats at all exterior doors as well as area rugs in high traffic areas.
It is important to remember that these floors cannot be sanded and refinished. For that reason it is important to use every trick to extend the life of your beautiful new engineered wood floor.

Engineered Hardwood is dimensionally stable because it is manufactured in a cross-ply construction. Most manufacturers today are using a 1.5mm up to a 4mm sandable veneer. These veneers are cut utilizing 3 different cutting methods. Rotary Peel, Sliced Peel and Dry-Sawn. Most of your American Manufacturers like Columbia,Armstrong,Anderson and Shaw are using the rotary peel method. Your china made private lable's are using the sliced peel method. Canadian manufacturers , Lauzon,Preverco and Mirage are all using the Dry Sawn method. Dry sawn is similar to the same method as solid when the logs are cut

Solid wood is a 100 year floor and can be refinished numerous times.( but you can only sand down as far as the nails/staples) Solid wood is also known to cup with high levels of moisture and humidity, Humidity needs to be maintained between 40 and 60 percent constantly wether you have engineered or solid.
