When it comes to choosing the right hardwood flooring for your home, how much do you really need to know? Okay, maybe you need to know a lot. In fact, you might have learned so much by now that you're a little overwhelmed by it all.

When you've done so much research that your head is spinning and you still can't decide on exactly which hardwood you want to choose for your flooring, consult this handy guide. We've distilled eight types of hardwood flooring down to the basics for easy reference.

  • White oak: Strong, durable, moisture-resistant, light in color.
  • Red oak: Resists wear, easy to stain, hard, adaptable.
  • American Cherry: Burgundy, easy to work with, darkens over time.
  • Hard Maple: Uniform texture, resists abrasion and wear, especially hard.
  • White Ash: Dense, strong, pale, handles heavy traffic well.
  • Yellow Birch: Fine texture, golden color, attractive curling grain patterns.
  • Black Walnut: Lustrous, easy to install, attractive pattern variations.
  • Brazilian Cherry: Versatile, distinctly colored, dense, hard, reliable.

I used to love my American Cherry flooring until over time like it says above it started to get darker and darker. Now, I am not a huge fan of my almost blackened hardwood flooring. I wish I would have known that American Cherry darkened over time. Of course my husband just said "ya lets get it," never did our research. Wish I would have know before! Next time I'll pick the hardwood....or tile? :)

Choosing hardwood flooring was like going to a bar for me. One hundred bottles on the bar, which one to choose? Ten different labels of vodka and it's all vodka! I finally decided on tigerwood hardwood floors and I'm am so pleased. I get more compliments on my hardwood flooring and I'm happy I chose an exotic wood instead of a more traditional oak floor or something along those lines.
