I am going to apply for the HGTV contest and I'm crossing my fingers. I have Shaw carpets installed in my home and they are wonderful. I love the green approach they are also making in the world. It's benefiting for everyone. I also am a fan of the Shaw Living Area rugs that they carry as well. great patterns to spice up my bedrooms.

What is green carpet? I don't mean the color, I mean is it really environmentally friendly? I thought all carpet was bad for the environment. When did this change and where do we get more general info on green carpets?

Rick posted on: April 8, 2009

Carpet is bad for the environment when it sits in landfills after people tear them out of their homes. Its not good. But there are carpet recycling centers and now carpet companies/
manufacturers are recycling their carpet more and making it eco-friendly by using water bottles, old carpet fibers. These green carpets are often more stain resistant than carpets that aren't recycled too. Carpet is fully capable of being green.

Susan, I'm with you I didn't think carpet was very environmentally friendly.

Yes, carpet can be green. To add to what Rick said, there is a carpet fiber, recently classified by the FTC in it's own subclass called triexta. Triexta can be made from corn sugar making it an eco-friendly choice. Beware though as triexta can also be made with petroleum, in which case it's not eco-friendly. there are some blogs on here about triexta if you want to know more.

Carpet is environmentally friendly, NOW. Why hasn't it been before? Did we have to take three steps back before we could make one step forward. Its great that there are flooring manufacturers and companies that are taking the environmentally friendly approach. informative blog, thx
