Buying Discontinued or Closeout Flooring

With the recent economic hardships, buying discontinued or closeout flooring is becoming more and more common. What customers must take into consideration when buying discontinued or closeout flooring is that the chance of finding the same flooring in the future, a month or a year down the road, is very unlikely. This can become a problem for several reasons:

  1. If you need additional flooring to complete your original project due to damaged pieces or an underestimated waste factor, you may not be able to find the same discontinued or closeout flooring.
  2. If you need to purchase additional flooring to complete a repair in case of a mishap such as water damage, stains, or scratches, you will often be out of luck if the floor you purchased is discontinued and sold out at retailers.
  3. If you want to install the same floors in other rooms in your home, you are unlikely to find the exact same flooring, especially in large quantities. You will likely have to search for a close match instead.

We have had several consumers contact us recently for help finding discontinued or closeout flooring. Here at FindAnyFloor, we are always glad to help, and in many cases can speak with our contacts in the floor industry to help locate the exact flooring you are searching for. However, there are times when discontinued flooring simply cannot be found. In these cases, we assist consumers in buying floors to match discontinued or closeout flooring.

Your safest bet is to be sure you buy more than enough flooring the first time. Take into consideration the waste factor, pieces needed for future repairs and any other rooms that you plan to expand the flooring into in the future when buying discontinued or closeout flooring.

I want to buy closeout flooring but I am a little worried about not finding the same options in the future- like it says - what if I damage the floors? So - Is it possible to just buy extra and store it? I am thinking about buying laminate flooring but what are some precautions I can take in storage and maintaining it while it sits? Are there any? My main concern is buying extra and maintaining the flooring while it sits in my garage (or a better are of my home to keep it new)Any suggestions?

Stacey posted on: May 29, 2009

Great question Joseph. Yes, you can buy plenty of extra and safely store it. I would make sure it is in a climate controlled room where it will be safe from water and humidity levels are stable. I would also worry about termites getting to it if you were to leave it in a garage or barn. Be sure to properly acclimate it to your room of installation before use. I would leave it in the box that it is packaged in. Let me know if I can be of any more help!

Thanks Stacey. I appreciate the advice!

I should also mention...be sure to lay it flat as the boards could warp overtime otherwise.

Stacy, I just read your article on Buying Discontinued or Closeout Flooring and I aggree with you 100%. Unfortunately for me I had no idea 4 years ago that the hardwood I was purchasing would soon be discontinued. I had 2,100 sq ft installed and I love it but am now dealing with 70 sq ft of damaged floor due to a leak in a pipe. So I'm looking for Mohawk Lexington Oak, Autumn WEC2-30 and was wondering if you can help me. I need 2-3 cases and would really appreciate any help. This web site is wonderful and very informative and I thank you in advance for any time you can spare in helping me.

I have a ranch house, with Mannington laminate on the entire floor. I am remodelling my kitchen and would like to keep the flooring the same. Is there any way to find some Mannington 65000 Honeytone Washington Oak? it was discontinued in 2005. The new model number is 65000L and now 65000M. It has a different locking mechanism and doesn't work. Any help with where I can find this stuff would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Craig

Craig, try these two links

To all others, unfortunately, I was unable to your floors. I recommend you contact your manufacturers to see what they recommend as a close match. Also, if you haven't already, do a Google, Yahoo, and MSN search for your floors. Try different combinations of the manufacturer's name, the product serial number, and the specific product's name. Many consumers locate their discontinued floors this way. Good luck to all and please let me know if I can be of any more assistance.

Also, if you click the link in my blog it will take you to an article that will help you find floors to match your discontinued flooring.

Paul and Loretta,

Your best bet is Craigslist. Just make sure that you put all of the information that you can so that the spiders from the search engine pick it up. If anyone is trying to sell that material and they search it, your ad is likely to pop up.

Mary posted on: August 24, 2009

Hello.

I have been all over the internet looking for larger pieces of 'scrap' vinyl flooring--end pieces and extras from jobsites, or extra cuts from mills, decent looking, but some imperfections acceptable-- for various craft projects I have in mind, and cannot find a thing. I thought that making something new out of what would just be thrown away is what 'green' was all about, so when I saw your site, I thought I'd give it a try. I sure hope that you can help--my fingers are about to fall off from all the searching, and I am at a brain freeze for any new ways to phrase what I need. (:

Thank you for any help you can offer!

Mary

Pergo Laminate Pro posted on: September 7, 2009

Thanks for the question Donna regarding the Pergo Laminate Floor. The best way to find discontinued flooring such as Dolce Mahogany from Pergo, is to put an ad on Craigslist.

Be very detailed in your ad with as much info as possible. If anyone is selling that material and does a search on the internet, it is likely that they will find your CL post.

How do I tell what I have and where can I find it. Home Depot and Lowes say they don't carry this type of locking mechanism anymore. Any idea?
