Volatile Organic Compounds

VOCs are carbon-based chemical compounds found in some flooring types and floor products (such as sealers, finishes, and adhesives). Tests carried out by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has proven that indoor air can contain up to 5 times more VOCs than outdoor air.

VOCs are known to bring on allergy-like symptoms and even create allergies or respiratory complications in people who never had allergies before. Additional studies indicate VOCs may also be related to increased cancer risk.

If you have children or are prone to allergic reactions, it may be a good idea to buy flooring and floor products that contain few to no VOCs. Ask the manufacturer or retailer about the floor materials used during production and installation to ensure they're as VOC-free as possible.

Feel free to post your suggestions or opinions to this blog!
