To some extent, you can find pet friendly carpet. It's all about the carpet's criteria such as type of carpet fiber used,
carpet construction method, and the type of carpet backing used. For example:
- You should choose a dense and durable carpet. These carpets are more likely to stand up to your dog's digging or cat's
clawing.
- You should choose a carpet fiber with built–in stain resistance that can't be washed off.
- You should carpet backings have a moisture resistant shield that prevents pet accidents from leaking to the carpet
backing.
- If your pet sheds a lot, you should choose a carpet in the same color range as your pet’s hair to disguise hair until it
is vacuumed.
- You should not choose a looped carpet as pet’s nails can catch on the carpet’s loops.
So, as you can see, it's hard to say that one particular carpet is pet friendly and another is not, as there are so many
factors to consider depending on what annoying habits your pet may have. What I can say for sure is that all carpet provides
a comfortable surface that is easy on pet’s joints and is non–slip when compared to hard flooring surfaces such as
hardwood, laminate, and tile floors. However, with any carpet, the longer pet accidents sit, the less likely they are to
completely come out. Immediate cleanup of pet accidents is required, even with carpets that are considered pet friendly
carpets.
One carpet collection that I consider to be pet friendly is Mohawk’s SmartStrand with DuPont Sorona renewable sourced
polymer. SmartStrand is made with a unique fiber called PTT, which was recently classified by the Federal Trade Commission in
its own subclass called triexta carpet fibers. Triexta fibers have built–in stain resistance that cannot be washed
off, requiring no chemical treatments during manufacturing and eliminating the need to reapply stain protection treatments.
Triexta carpet fibers are also very durable and resilient.
