Certain insects are a primary source of many household allergies. Many are notorious for leaving behind microscopic waste (droppings), to which many homeowners have allergic sensitivity. This waste can also be very difficult to remove. Mites are microscopic invertebrates which cling to many different surfaces, including bedding, couches, and carpets.
It's for this reason that carpet is not generally recommended for people who have allergy sensitivity. Mites cling stubbornly to carpet fibers and usually can only be removed through carpet shampooing or steam cleaning. It is important that mites are removed as often as possible, as they're commonly associated with hay fever, dermatitis, asthma and eczema.
Cork flooring is a perfect solution to this problem as it naturally contains Suberin, a waxy substance found in the top layer of cork which acts as an insect repellant. Suberin can help discourage insects including mites, cockroaches and termites from penetrating your floor surface. Make sure you choose cork flooring that's produced and sealed without the addition of harmful VOCs or chemicals.
