Fish Tanks and Flooring Solutions

A stable, indoor humidity level is very important when it comes to your floors. Floors made from wood or organic materials, such as cork, bamboo and hardwood, have a tendency to warp and move over time when exposed to extremes in humidity. High humidity levels generally lead to expansion, while too low humidity can cause floors to shrink and crack. Running water, standing water and even open water containers can all affect the humidity level in your home.

What does this have to do with fish? Everything. Depending on the size of the fish tank, the humidity level of a room could increase, which could consequently damage your floors. In order to compensate for the heightened moisture level as a result of an open fish tank, invest in a dehumidifier. A dehumidifier helps balance indoor humidity by absorbing excess moisture in the air.

Standard Humidity Levels for . . .

• Bamboo Flooring: 40-60%
• Hardwood Flooring: 40-60%
• Cork Flooring: 35-65%

It also works the other way around...if your floors are too dry and shrinking, you can add a fish tank or a water fountain to add humidity.
