Wear-Dated Carpet Fiber Technology

A carpet gives a room an ambience of elegance and warmth apart from adding to walking comfort. Additionally, a carpet deadens sound and acts as a thermal insulator. Here are a few facts about carpeting:

  • 95% of all carpets are tufted. The rest are woven.
  • Tufted carpets entail tufting the yarn into a primary backing which is glued or laminated to a secondary backing which reinforces dimensional stability.
  • Woven carpets are made through a process known as weaving which requires a loom. Lengthwise yarn (warp) interlaces with widthwise yarn (weft) to form the fabric.
  • When the carpet is manufactured, its top surface has variations in pile height which gives it a fuzzy appearance. The carpet is fed through a shearing machine which trims the unevenness to create a smooth unblemished surface.
  • Durability in a carpet is a function of yarn and fiber as well as density and twist. Fibers vary considerably with some being better able to resist soil and stains and hold color.
  • Most all carpets require a base of carpet padding. The life of a carpet is significantly enhanced by the kind of carpet padding used.
  • Some manufacturers recommend a particular type of carpet padding. Alternatively the Carpet and Rug Institute offer selection guidance through some of their publications.
  • Frequent vacuuming also extends the life of carpet.

Wear–Dated® is a brand name that uses nylon in their carpets. The company developed Nylon 6,6 fifty years ago which they continue to use in their carpets. Nylon 6,6 has several superior characteristics compared with other nylon fibers. Wear–Dated carpets come in a number of different styles and types under different names such as: Wear–Dated®, Wear–Dated DuraSoft®, Wear–Dated Natural Nylon™, Wear–Dated Freedom™, Wear–Dated DuraSoft Natural Nylon™, and – two brands with recycled content – Wear–Dated Renew™ and Wear–Dated Renew Natural Nylon™. Each of these names has different characteristics with nylon being common to all. Wear–Dated "Rene" and "Natural Nylon" have a minimum of 10% of recycled content that goes up to 25%.

Wear–Dated carpets undergo their own Wear–Dated® Tough Testing and Certification process for durability, wear and soil–resistance. The test also includes other tests like Color and Light fastness, Tuft Bind and Static Control.

In 2005, the company released a new brand specially treated with Scotchgard® Protector. This is a patented process that affords advanced repel technology with a soil protector and stain blocker which is imparted to every fiber. The technology protects the carpet from dirt and soil with a protective coating from the tip of each fiber through to the bottom. It ensures that dirt trapped within does not adhere to the fibers and are immediately responsive to vacuuming. This provides for added stain resistance to normal beverage and food spills. Such stains clean out more easily. The company offers a 10–year limited stain and soil warranty on Scotchgard® treated carpets.
