How Wide is Carpet?

A question we have received from a few different customers is this: How Wide is Carpet? In this blog, we will address common carpet widths and why it is important to know how wide carpet is when shopping.

Because different carpet flooring manufacturers make carpet rolls of different widths, there is no short and simple answer to the question,"How wide is carpet?" I can say that the most common carpet width is 12’ and the second most common is 15’ rolls, though it is also possible to see other carpet widths such as 13’6” wide with commercial carpets.

So why is it important to know how wide your carpet is before buying it? It is common to think that since you need the same square footage of carpet regardless, that roll widths don’t matter, but consider this: In a room that is 24’ wide, two lengths of a 12’ roll will cover the room perfectly with no waste. If you were to purchase carpet in a 15’ roll, you would need to purchase the same two lengths of carpet, but since your two lengths of carpet will be a total of 30’ wide, you will have 6’ of width that would be wasted. If you want extra carpet to make matching rugs and for replacing possible damaged spots in the future, this may be fine to you, but someone on a budget may not want to pay for the extra carpet.

In closing, to answer the question, "How wide is carpet?" I can only say that it varies by carpet manufacturer. The more important question is, "What carpet width is right for your room’s width?"

Note most all carpets come 12 ft wide rarely do they come 15 ft. In most cases 15 ft goods are special order products like berber where the seams may be noticeable by inexperienced installers. Another consideration is that more and more manufactures are making the carpet 11ft 11 inches or sometimes even 11ft10inches in these cases a 24ft room might need more than two shots because you would then be 4 inches short. They claim 12ft but I have found this to be deceptive and when you think about it if they produce hundreds of thousands of yards these extra 2 inches shirted on the widths can result in more material for the manufactures to produce more for less and ripping the public off. Its sort of like the 2x4 theory were you never see a true 2x4 but rather a 1 3/4 inches by 3 3/4 inches.

Mohawk makes most of their nylon loops 13'6". The Dixie Group makes all their carpets 12' wide. Mohawk, Shaw, and Beauleiu make both 12 and 15'wide.

Steve, good carpet info; bad 2x4 info. They measure 1-1/2" x 3-1/2".
