Dishonest Carpet Labeling?

Have you ever been shopping for carpet and found what appeared to be the exact same carpet under two different brand names for two different prices? Maybe you noticed that the pattern was exactly the same, or that the picture on the displays matched perfectly. Or maybe it was matching product numbers that got you wondering. This is a common occurrence that may create confusion when shopping for carpet. How do you know which to choose? Is one better than the other?

Here is what is happening:

In many cases, carpet manufacturers are selling the exact same carpet under different brand names to different competitors. In addition, some retailers are adding their own brand names to the carpets they sell. This is probably done to prevent comparison shopping.

If you end up in this situation, here is what you should find out:

  • What is the pile weight and density of each carpet?
  • Are they made of the same fiber?
  • Do they have the same backing?
  • Do they have the same warranty?
  • Do they have the same stain protection?

If you find that everything is matching up, chances are the only difference is the brand name and the price. If I was in this situation, I'd save the money and pick the less expensive one, even if it is a brand name that I don't recognize.
