Many people assume that buying stain-resistant carpet means never having to clean the floor, because the carpet will not absorb any stains. Unfortunately, this is a myth. It's important to keep in mind that stain-resistant carpet only resists stains, and is not the same thing as stain-proof.
The chemicals used to treat stain-resistant carpets, such as perfluorinated chemicals (PFCs), either slow down the absorption of stains or only apply to certain types of stains. The quality of resistance depends on the type of chemical used.
PFCs, used mostly for stain-resistant coatings for upholstery and carpets, are designed to repel grease and water. Most stain-resistant carpets only repel grease, dirt, and water. Therefore, carpets treated with stain-resistant chemicals still require regular maintenance; and if Fido urinates on the carpet, stain treatment after the event is still required.
There are certain types of fibers such as nylon that usually contain stain-resistant chemicals. Carpet fibers like polyester and olefin, are normally not treated with these chemicals because they are naturally stain resistant and repel stains much better than other fiber types.
Most carpets contain some degree of stain resistance. When shopping, don't base your purchase decision on brand names. A number of discount carpet stores offer carpets with quality stain resistance and durability.
Keep in mind that stain-resistant carpets are usually more expensive than non-resistant ones. This is because non-resistant carpet types will absorb liquids and stain much easier, resulting in a shorter life cycle. Plus, depending on the stain, you may have to spend even more money for a professional cleaner. In the long run, a stain-resistant carpet can save you a lot more money!
