So you thought you could add some shine back to your laminate floors by waxing them, right? Wrong! Waxing laminate is unnecessary and actually should be avoided because it leaves a build up which dulls the floor. But worry not! There are several methods to remove the wax build up. Depending on the type of laminate, some cleaning solutions won't work as well as others; because of this, be sure to spot test any solution on a hidden area of the floor first.
Try any of these methods:
• First, try to remove as much build up as possible with a plastic scraper. You can also try melting the wax with a blow dryer on low setting. Wipe up the melted wax with a white paper towel or cloth.• Apply a solution of warm water and vinegar. Hand clean with white cloths; wipe in one direction (do not rub) or use a damp mop.• Another cleanser that may work is window cleaner. Use this on small stains as ammonia can strip away a laminate's protective sealant.• Mineral spirits - aka white spirits or Stoddard solvent; a petroleum distillate commonly used as a paint thinner and mild solvent. Some people use this to clean up oil, grease and wax.
Your laminate floors should be easier to clean and maintain once the wax build up is removed. Simple sweeping, dusting, and damp mopping help keep a laminate's luster. Post a comment if you know of other helpful methods, or have questions!
A word of caution to anyone that uses mineral spirits. It spells horrible so you will have to ventilate the area well. Try in a hidden area first.
Can Murphy Oil be used to clean laminated flooringThank youFrank Brace
Frank, I do not recommend it at all. Murphy's Oil Soap can leave a filmy residue on the laminate that is hard to remove. Use a manufacturer recommended cleaner.Stacey
we just put laminated flooring in our house. it seems to have a film on them. they always look streaky and shows all foot prints, wet or dry
I would love it if someone could recommend how to get rid of the film damp mopping leaves on the laminate. Can I use a lambs wool pad on a buffer? I know it said not to wax or polish but I am thinking they mean a product.
Thanks for the question Pat. We don't recommend a buffer on laminate as that type of floor is not meant to be buffed. The film is caused by content in the water that you are using. We recommend using Bona Hardwood Floor Mop with the laminate cleaner. We have tested this against other brands and it seems to be the best. We have contacted Bona so that we can direct flooring consumers to their product. If you go to www.onlinefloorstore.com and type in Bona Hardwood Floor Mop, you will be able to purchase the product. Use the code FAFBKF in order to get free shipping. Don't forget to order the laminate cleaner with it. I believe it is an extra 8.99. Bona fixes their prices, so that no matter where you purchase, you should get the same price. Let us know how this works for you.
WE JUST BUILT A NEW HOUSE. THE CLEANERS THAT CAME IN PUT SOME SORT OF WAX OR POLISH ON OUR LAMINATE FLOORS. WE HAVE TRIED THE BRUCE CLEANER THAT THE MFG. SUGGESTED BUT IT STILL LOOKS DULL AND SHOWES EVERY FOOT PRINT. HOW CAN WE GET THIS UP WITHOUT HARMING THE FLOORS. WE DO NOT WANT TO MOVE OUR FUNITURE IN UNTIL THIS IS CLEAN. WE NEED HELP!!THANKS
Did you try the 2 cups of white vinegar to 1 gallon of water to clean the wax off your laminate? This would be a great place to start. Be careful not to get the laminate very wet and just use a damp cloth to do this followed by a dry towel to clean up excess moisture. Then, try the Bona Hardwood Floor Mop kit with the Laminate cleaner cartridge. This will usually do the trick. To purchase Bona you can do it online at companies like http://www.onlinefloorstore.com and search for Bona Hardwood Floor Mop and be sure to get the Laminate Flooring cartridge which is like 8 or 9 dollars. If you enter in FAFBKF in the checkout at online floor store, you will get free shipping on all your cleaning products. Let us know how the laminate flooring turns out.
My son was trying to get a spot up and he used furntiure cleaner on the laminate floor and now we are sliping on it what can we do to get it upThanks
I have laminate that looks dull. I started with amonia and water but just left it dull. Started looking for other products and found nothing that made it look shiny. I started using Quik Shine it it made it look amazing, but after reading that wax or anything else like that is not recommended. I am at a loss. I hate how dull it looks but can't afford to replace it with something else. I was on website that recommended a cleaner called Rejuvenate. Have you heard of it and would you recommend it. Also would there be a build up of the Quik Shine on my floor. I can't see that there is one but I am sure there would have to be. I would appreciate your opinion on this. Thanks!
Hey Susan, check out the post that is 2 up from yours (by FAF laminate Pro). I would recommend the Bona Tile, Laminate, and Stone cleaner. Here is a link to a blog about this product that you can copy/paste in your browser: http://blogs.findanyfloor.com/green/CareAndMaintenance/BonasEcoFriendlyStoneTileLaminateandVinylCleaner.xhtml
HELP. Been stripping wax with Armstrong's remover but it left the floor streaky. Tried a second time and it has caused yellow spots here and there. A third go 'round has increased the size of the yellow puddles...oh geez, now what?
