How to Remove Pet Urine from Carpet

So your furry friend had an accident on your carpet? Don't fret! There are ways to remove both the stain and smell of urine from your carpet. If you search the Internet for help you are likely to be bombarded with a lot of conflicting information. Some sites will tell you to use an ammonia solution, while others warn that pets often return to spots they have "previously visited," and the smell of ammonia may actually attract them rather than deter them.

Below I have listed a few different methods that seem to be generally recognized as the most effective. Remember to always test any cleaning solution on a small hidden section of carpet to ensure it won't damage or discolor your floor. And don't forget to blot stains rather than rub them, as rubbing can embed the stain further into the carpet fibers.

Here are a few different methods you can try:

Pour a solution containing ¼ teaspoon of dish soap with one cup of warm water onto the stain. Extract the solution (through blotting or, more effectively, with a wet/dry vacuum*) and rinse the area until no visible stain or smell remains.
Mix together 1 part white vinegar with 1 part water and apply to the stain. Extract the solution (again through blotting or with a wet/dry vacuum), rinse, and extract again.
You can also try using commercial enzyme treatments (available at most pet-supply stores) that will chemically break down the urine and help remove the odor.

Removing urine can be a daunting task. If you aren't sure if you have removed all of the stain/odor you can use a blacklight (or your pet's nose) to help locate anything you may have missed. If you have a great way to remove urine stains, feel free to post it in the comments of this blog!

Thanks for the info Vern. I've used Nature's Miracle, but my dog always seems to find the spot again. The challenge is getting all of the stain. If you miss any, they will go right back to it and mess again. Still not sure what the best method is, so I'm going to try some of the ones in this blog.
