When properly sealed, stone floors can be relatively easy to maintain. You can also minimize stone floor damage by taking
preventative measures such as placing mats in doorways, putting floor protectors on furniture legs and caulking the floor in
water susceptible areas (e.g. bathroom). Sealing stone floors periodically can also help minimize floor damage.
Stone floors should never be cleaned with abrasive or ammonia-based cleaning products, tile cleaners or scouring pads as
these things can cause permanent damage. Although most stone floor types may seem very durable, they can be prone to damage
when exposed to spills or standing water. Stone floors should be damp mopped with a clean mop and a manufacturer-recommended
cleaning solution. Rinse and ring out the mop frequently so as to avoid leaving behind a soapy residue on your stone floors.
Other stone floor cleaning tips:
- Never clean stone floors with cleaning solutions that contain acidic substances such as lemon juice and/or vinegar.
- Clean up spills immediately.
- Treat hard-to-remove stains with a neutral pH detergent.
- Routinely sweep stone floors.
- Have stone floors sealed according to the manufacturer's recommendation.
