Don't Get Shocked by Carpet Static!

When I was a kid I took great joy in running the soles of my shoes up and down our plush carpet until I had built up enough of a static charge to "shock" my little sister. Seeing the tiny bolt of electricity jump from my finger (and the look on her face) was great fun! What was fun then isn't nearly as enjoyable now. Static from carpet can be quite annoying! It can ruin a good hairstyle and cause painful shocks (sorry sis!).

I decided to search the Internet for a solution to reduce the amount of static in your carpet. Static tends to occur more frequently in a dry environment so you might want to purchase a humidifier to increase the humidity in a static prone room. If you're looking for a stylish solution, you can try purchasing a pair of static dissipating shoes (like those made by Dr. MartensTM).

A cheap and simple alternative is to fill a spray bottle with one part liquid fabric softener and five parts water and lightly mist your carpet. Allow it to sit overnight and in the morning you should be static free!

Great blog. I've been using the fabric softener method for years now. You have to reapply ever couple of months, but it works great.

WOW! I never knew the fabric softener method! NEWS TO ME! Thanks a lot for the blog. I'm going to try it out right now.
