Bamboo Flooring - Not All Bamboo Floors Are Created Equal

If you are shopping for bamboo flooring and wonder why some floor products have such a difference in price when they "look" the same, just remember there is a reason one is so much cheaper than another. It stands to reason that a bamboo floor product sold for $1.59 is probably not the same product that is sold for $5.99. Sure some stores may charge slightly more for the same bamboo flooring product based on their location and level of service, but in most cases it is the quality of bamboo flooring that determines the price.

Some companies, usually the lower priced bamboo floors, harvest the bamboo before maturity damaging the plant and preventing it from regenerating. In addition, younger bamboo is not as strong as the mature plant, and can be discolored. The type of flooring adhesives used in the manufacturing process affect the price. Higher quality bamboo uses eco–friendly glues that contain little to no formaldehyde. Yes, you read that correctly, lower quality bamboo is usually manufactured with glues that have high formaldehyde content and get be a health hazard. Just like the adhesive, the top layer finish can have a big impact on the price of bamboo flooring as well as health aspects. Higher quality bamboo floors use eco–friendly finishes or at least a finish that has little to no VOC's, a known carcinogen and health hazard.

Another factor is the quality. One major manufacturer states they only use the highest quality bamboo strips for their bamboo manufacturing while the lower quality strips are usually sold and distributed to discount houses. This leads us to bamboo flooring warranties and the difference from one flooring manufacturer to another.

While many bamboo floor manufacturers claim they have a long term warranty, always ask for a copy before you purchase. You will be surprised at how many things are not covered in the warranty. Ask your local floor retailer about the service level from the manufacturer should you have a problem with the flooring.

Visit our bamboo flooring sections to find quality bamboo manufacturers, and use our local floor directory to find a retailer in your area. Many of our staff have been to dozens of the bamboo flooring factories in Asia and have logged their manufacturing process including the types of adhesives and finishes that they use. If you have any questions about bamboo, whether it's about a brand, the quality, or the finish, feel free to use our Live Chat located at the top of every page to talk to one of our bamboo professionals.

Great post. There are 5 critical steps in manufacturing bamboo flooring that improves the quality.

These extra steps include controlled moisture content, improved seasoning, a superior European glue formulation and system, improved pressure control, hot pressing and scientifically tested balancing times.

With cheaper products you might have a thinner board that will have a shorter life time, as you wont be able to sand and refinish the flooring as many times.

I NEVER knew that there was so much to know about bamboo flooring. I also didn't realize that there were manufacturers out there using bamboo that isn't mature yet to make flooring. Doesn't that completely erase the effects that bamboo flooring can have when installed in your home? I mean ... Isn't the point of having bamboo floors in your home to be sustainable? green? eco-friendly? and helpful to our environment? This is a great post and I appreciate the bamboo education given.
