What is an Oriental Area Rug?

Image of a traditional oriental area rugThe term "Oriental" is thrown around rather freely in the world of area rugs. So what exactly is an Oriental area rug?

Oriental rugs are made of wool, silk, or cotton and come from the continent of Asia. This includes China, India, Iran (formerly known as Persia), Turkey, Pakistan, and several other countries.

An authentic Oriental area rug is made on a loom and typically has a hand-knotted pile though sometimes may be hand–woven without a pile. Authentic hand–knotted Oriental rugs can take weavers weeks or even years to make. Hand–knotted Persian and Turkish rugs are some of the most popular types of authentic Oriental area rugs sold today. Machine made area rugs, commonly made in the U.S., may resemble Oriental area rugs, but are not considered authentic. These are usually listed as Oriental rug designs, rather than oriental rugs.

If anyone has silk oriental rugs like I do then be careful about cleaning them.If you vacuum your home, do not vacuum your rug. If you have fringe on the oriental rug it will not take kindly to a vacuum.Comb out with a brush (literally a hair brush will do just fine) Do not soak, vacuum, machine wash not even dry-clean your silk rug. Always dust out your oriental rug and when it starts to become a lighter shade of color its time to shake it out. These carpets are expensive and delicate so if you've never had these varieties of decor in your home I hope my pointers help.
